Salomon Rondon has sent a message to Alan Shearer on Twitter after his Newcastle switch.
Salomon Rondon has vowed to Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer to do the number nine shirt justice following his switch to St James’ Park on Monday.
The 28-year-old centre-forward has joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from West Brom, with Dwight Gayle going the other way as part of the deal also on loan.
Rondon has taken up the famous number nine at Newcastle previously worn by Shearer and has responded to a good luck message on social media from the club legend.
“Many thanks, Alan Shearer!!! It makes me very proud and it’s an honour to wear the number 9 shirt that you had so much success in. I’ll be giving my all to do the shirt justice,” Rondon wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Rondon was part of the West Brom side that were relegated from the top flight last season, but he still managed 10 goals across all competitions for them.
He is a powerful striker renowned for his strength and aerial ability, while he also has three years of experience in English football under his belt with the Baggies.
Rafael Benitez has now added forwards Rondon and Yoshinori Muto to his squad ahead of the new season.
Newcastle found it extremely difficult last season to be prolific in front of goal and they will be hoping that some fresh options in the final third can bring greater success.
