Aston Villa’s reported pursuit of defender Matt Targett is a very smart one.

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Southampton defender Matt Targett on loan and he would be an ideal addition to the squad.

According to the Sunday Mirror (19 August, page 64), the Championship side are keen on landing the 22-year-old, but face competition from Middlesbrough too.

The report explains that Premier League outfit Southampton are prepared to loan out the full-back and they rejected a £15million bid for him from Fulham on deadline day.

Villa can still add players to their squad on loan until the end of August and the potential arrival of Targett would be an excellent piece of business.

The English left-back thrived last season out on loan with Fulham and helped them win promotion via the Championship play-offs, meaning he has vital experience of the division.

He is an attack-minded defender that loves to bomb forward and is also strong in one-on-one defensive scenarios.

Villa manager Steve Bruce could do with a new left-back in his squad and Targett would be a considerable upgrade on Neil Taylor.

Alan Hutton has slotted in at left-back for the Midlands giants, but signing Targett would allow him to move back to his preferred position at right-back.

Villa have started the new league season in strong fashion by going unbeaten in their opening three fixtures, which is why they may only need a couple of loan signings to be right in the mix for promotion.
