According to a report from the Scottish Sun, the League One club have turned their attention to the 21-year-old after missing out on Hibernian’s John McGinn.
It is understood that Sunderland want to get a deal done quickly for the Scottish central midfielder, who does not feature in the plans of new Gers manager Steven Gerrard.
The report adds that Gerrard is prepared to loan him out to experience regular first-team action in the upcoming season, and Sunderland are seen as a decent fit ahead of League One rivals that are also interested in his signature.
Docherty has been an unused substitute in Rangers’ first two competitive matches of the season against FC Shkupi in the Champions League qualifiers.
The central midfielder is yet to make a significant impact since his January arrival at Ibrox from Hamilton and could now be set for a temporary spell in English football.
It makes sense for Docherty to be playing regularly at his age as he looks to develop and Sunderland are expected to be launching a promotion bid in the new season.
