Newcastle United are reportedly close to securing a deal for defender Fabian Schar from Spanish outfit Deportivo La Courna.

According to the Mirror, the Magpies have agreed a £3.5million deal with Deportivo for the Switzerland international and he is set for a medical with the club today (Wednesday).

The report explains that Rafael Benitez’s side are on the verge of securing their fourth signing of the summer.

Schar is a no-nonsense centre-back that looks set to be the latest arrival at St James’ Park after the club already completed deals for Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-Yueng and Kenedy (loan).

Schar is most recognised for his time with FC Basel and has since had a taste of top-flight football in both Spain and Germany.

The centre-back would give Benitez some much needed options at centre-back, with Florian Lejeune, Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark the only senior defenders currently in the squad.

The 6ft 1in defender should be able to handle the physical demands of the Premier League and could follow new Arsenal signing Stephan Lichtsteiner as the latest Swiss player to join the Premier League.
