Jamie Redknapp believes that Liverpool and Tottenham will be the closest challengers next season to Manchester City for the Premier League title.

All eyes will be on Manchester City next season to see if they can successfully defend their Premier League crown, after winning it in such emphatic fashion in the last campaign. Pep Guardiola’s side were a cut above the rest, but they will know that the English title has not been won back-to-back since Manchester United in 2009.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has backed Manchester City to retain their domestic crown, but has picked out Liverpool and Tottenham as the most likely challengers to stand in their way.

Neither clubs have won the top-flight title since the introduction of the Premier League, but both have two highly-rated managers in Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino.

“Liverpool and Tottenham will be the closest challengers to Manchester City,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“Obviously, Manchester United under Jose Mourinho will want to kick on, but Liverpool and Tottenham will be the closest to City.

“Having said that, I’ve got a feeling City are going to do it again, they’ve got so many good players.”

Liverpool held onto a fourth-placed league finish last season, and made it all the way to the final of the Champions League before losing to Real Madrid, something that highlighted the improvements Klopp is making on the pitch.

The Merseyside club play an attractive style of football under the German boss, but Liverpool may need to become a little more disciplined to endure a 38-game league season and become Champions.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have established themselves as one of the best teams in England during the last few years, but their wait for silverware under Pochettino continues.
