Rangers ace Ross McCrorie played the full 90 minutes in Rangers’ Europa League win on Thursday night.
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard certainly had some firm words to say with regards to Ross McCrorie being used in defence last season, but the player should take this as a huge positive.
The Gers boss explained the 20-year-old’s career could have been destroyed from playing as a centre-back and he opted to use the versatile ace in midfield on Thursday night during the 2-0 Europa League win over FK Shkupi.
“We had a player playing at centre-back position that wasn’t his real position, who was 19 years of age and thrown in at the deep end, who could have been destroyed in terms of his career,” Gerrard told BT Sport during their live broadcast of the Europa League clash (12 July).
Gerrard clearly rates the youngster very highly and the fact he has marked him down as a midfielder already suggests he has a clear path for his future.
The Light Blues manager was of course a world-class midfielder himself from his playing career with Liverpool and is exactly the type of mentor that should help develop players in the centre of the park.
McCrorie enjoyed a steady performance in the defensive midfield role on Thursday, as Gerrard’s first competitive match at Ibrox ended in a 2-0 win in Europe.
He clearly has the defensive prowess to help anchor the backline and he will now hope to develop his game on the ball, where he can help dictate play as a deep-lying playmaker.
McCrorie should be ecstatic by the fact he seems to be firmly in the sights of Gerrard and there is an opportunity for him to become a key player under his tenure.
