Rafael Benitez has admitted he is still happy with his Newcastle squad after a mixed transfer window.
Rafael Benitez has admitted he is pleased with the Newcastle United squad despite not enjoying the perfect transfer window this summer.
The Magpies managed to completed the deadline day signing of Swansea defender Federico Fernandez yesterday and he was one of seven new arrivals in the window.
Fernandez has made the switch to St James’ Park alongside Yoshinori Muto, Fabian Schar, Martin Dubravka, Salomon Rondon (loan), Ki Sung-Yueng and Kenedy (loan).
Benitez has explained that Newcastle could have done more business, but is preparing for another positive season in the top flight.
“I’m sure fans will think: ‘Oh Rafa is angry.’ But I try to improve my team during the window, but that is over,” Benitez said, as quoted by the Newcastle Chronicle.
“Could it be better? Yes, always it could be better, but I am happy with my team, I believe the spirit is there with my players to have another good season.”
The overriding feeling from Newcastle fans is that they could have spent more this summer, having seen some Premier League clubs strengthen considerably such as promoted duo Fulham and Wolves.
However, the North East club will have to make do with what they have and begin the new league season at home to Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.
They have at least tried to address their problem in attack over the summer, with new centre-forwards Muto and Rondon hoping to provide more goals in the final third than the club managed last season.
