Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has explained his excitement with the signing of defender Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna.

The Magpies completed the deal for the 26-year-old from the La Liga club on Thursday morning and have now added four new recruits to St. James’ Park.

He joins Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-Yueng and Kenedy (loan) as summer signings so far made by the North East club.

Schar is set for his first taste of the Premier League following his move to England and will hope to be a valuable player in Benitez’s squad.

“I’m really pleased to welcome Fabian to Newcastle United,” Benitez told the club’s official website.

“He is an international, did well in the World Cup and has great experience. He adds competition in this position and that is a positive for the team.”

Schar has just enjoyed a decent World Cup campaign with Switzerland by starring in all three group stage matches and he has 42 international caps for his nation.

He is a ball-playing centre-back who has a great range of passing and is also a monster in the air; something that should help him adjust to life in the Premier League quickly.

However, he could have fierce competition in trying to dislodge last season’s fierce centre-back combination of Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune to break into the starting XI on a permanent basis.
