Peter Lovenkrands ranted on Twitter that Newcastle United should have been awarded a penalty during a vital period in their 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

The Magpies suffered elimination from the second round of the Carabao Cup, but there was a controversial moment that occurred when the scoreline was 2-1 to the hosts.

Forest goalkeeper Luke Steele collided with attacker Ayoze Perez in the penalty area in stoppage time, but the referee waved away appeals and the Championship side secured the win with a third goal.

Ex-Newcastle player Lovenkrands has insisted that his former side deserved a penalty for the challenge on Perez, delivering a stern criticism of the referee.

“Just seen the highlights from the Newcastle game last night, ref had a absolute nightmare at the end, stonewall penalty!” Lovenkrands wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Newcastle supporters may have every right to be aggrieved with the penalty incident, but they were not quite at the races against Forest at the City Ground.

The North East club are still without a win in their opening four games across all competitions this season and a daunting trip to Manchester City faces them at the weekend.

A number of fringe players in the squad got the chance to impress Benitez in the midweek cup fixture, but they may be no closer to breaking into the league XI.
