Newcastle United must join race to sign highly-rated German defender Marvin Plattenhardt.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is seen during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Chelsea at St. James Park on May 13, 2018 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle United are now one left-back light after the exit of Massadio Haidara and manager Rafael Benitez could do with a replacement to compete with Paul Dummett in the starting XI next season.

Haidara’s contract at St James’ Park ended this summer and he has join French second-tier club RC Lens as a free agent, seemingly leaving a spot open in the Magpies squad.

Newcastle fan favourite Dummett is a solid option in the defence, but there are certainly better options out there and strengthening the squad has to be a priority this summer.

The Mirror reports that Huddersfield have entered the battle to land the German defender alongside Everton and Bournemouth, while Sky Sports previously claimed that Leicester City were also keen.

Newcastle supporters are crying out for the club to splash the cash this summer to help them consolidate themselves back in the top flight and they could do a lot worse than prioritising the Germany international.

Plattenhardt is an attack-minded left-back that looks like he could be well suited to English football with his offensive traits and he dazzled in the Bundesliga last season.

He managed eight assists in 38 appearances in all competitions for Hertha during the last campaign and would surely light up St James’ Park if he linked up with Benitez.
