Matt Upson has criticised West Ham after their opening day defeat to Liverpool.
Matt Upson believes that West Ham were far too open in their opening day defeat to Liverpool and identified the midfield as a weakness area.
The Hammers were thumped 4-0 at Anfield in the Premier League and will be hoping to bounce back at home to Bournemouth at the weekend.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini had a difficult first game in charge of his new side and will be looking for some of his new signings to come good in the next few weeks.
Ex-Hammers defender and current BBC pundit Upson believes that his former side weren’t solid against Liverpool, while also raising questions over the midfield.
West Ham started with a midfield duo of Mark Noble and Declan Rice, but they failed to provide much cover to the back four.
“The game seemed a bit flat to me [against Liverpool],” Upson told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“They (West Ham) didn’t really get hold of how Liverpool went about hurting them. They didn’t seem to set up too defensively to want to stop Liverpool play and it didn’t gel for me.
”The personnel, especially in the midfield was wide open. It’s not very solid that team.”

West Ham have an extremely difficult set of fixtures on the horizon, making the Bournemouth clash at the London Stadium vital.
Pellegrini does have a host of midfield options in his squad if he wants to alter personnel from the Liverpool loss, but there has only been one league game this season and Jurgen Klopp’s side are expected to challenge for the league title.
