Celtic host AEK Athens on Wednesday night in a Champions League qualifying third round match and John Hartson has suggested promoting Leigh Griffiths to the starting XI.

The Bhoys have seen off Alashkert and Rosenborg in the two previous qualifying rounds, while they also got their league campaign off to a winning start at the weekend by beating Livingston 3-1.

Pundit and ex-Celtic ace Hartson has hinted that bringing Griffiths into the side against Greek club AEK Athens could be a positive move.

However, the 27-year-old missed the four European clashes due to a knee injury and his only action so far this season was a substitute appearance against Livingston.

“If I was in Brendan’s shoes ahead of tomorrow night’s game, I think I’d absolutely be going for it,” Hartson wrote in the Glasgow Evening Times.

“We all know that Brendan liked an attacking formation anyway but I do just wonder whether Leigh Griffiths has done enough to get himself in there from the start against AEK Athens.

“I don’t think it quite worked with Leigh and Moussa Dembele together but the Scotland international and Odsonne Edouard starting together may well be something to consider.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers has preferred Celtic centre-forward Odsonne Edouard at the beginning of the 2018/19 campaign and he has four goals under his belt already.

Griffiths has proved he can be a clinical goal-scorer at Parkhead, and making the most of the home tie against AEK Athens could be crucial for the Scottish giants.

The left-footed attacker was directly involved in 21 goals last season for Celtic and it will be interesting to see if Rodgers turns to him from the start in midweek.
