Sunderland captain George Honeyman posted a message on Twitter to supporters after being handed the armband by new manager Jack Ross.
Sunderland ace George Honeyman has been named the club captain for the upcoming season and revealed his delight on Twitter with the accolade.
The 23-year-old is a product of the club’s academy and has gone on to become a first-team regular for them in recent times.
New Sunderland boss Jack Ross has decided to put his faith in the youngster as the new skipper, as his side prepare to kick-off the new season in League One with a home match against Charlton Athletic this weekend.
Honeyman explained his emotion on social media following the conformation of his new role at the club.
“Incredible honour and privilege to captain this great club. Anyone close to me knows how much this means to me. Thank you so much for your kind messages they mean the world. Can’t wait for it all to start on Saturday,” Honeyman wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Honeyman is set to be a key player for Sunderland this season and will hope to play a role in them bouncing straight back to the Championship at the first time of asking.
He is a versatile ace that can play in either central or wide midfield positions and enjoyed a strong campaign last year despite relegation.
The technically gifted player chipped in with seven goals and two assists in all competitions, but he could be even more prolific in League One.
