Everton should step up their interest in defender Ben Gibson.

Everton have held reported interest in Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson this summer and now may be the perfect time to make contact with an official move.

According to the Daily Star in their print edition (Page 44, 10 June), the Toffees are keen on signing Boro’s 25-year-old.

West Ham, Leicester City and Southampton have also been mentioned as top-flight clubs that are interested in the Championship ace, according to the Daily Mail.

According to the latest report from the Mirror, Leicester could move for Gibson this summer if they land up losing Harry Maguire amid interest from Manchester United.

The report adds that the centre-back is likely to cost somewhere around the £12-13million mark that the Foxes bid for him last summer, as Boro need to raise funds after missing out on promotion.

Everton are crying out for a couple of new centre-backs in their squad for the new season, with both Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka on the decline.

According to Goal, Marco Silva’s side are understood to be on the verge of signing Barcelona defender Yerry Mina for £27million.

However, the Merseyside club could still do with an extra centre-back on top of Mina and adding someone that is proven in England could be key.

Gibson is a ball-playing centre-back who looks a perfect fit for Silva’s side and, if he can recapture his best form, he is good enough to play for a top Premier League side.

The commanding defender is a powerhouse in the air and could be real value for money if Everton manage to pick him up for anywhere near £12million.
