The Bhoys were held at home to a draw in the first leg of their third round qualifying tie, with the Greek club in the ascendancy courtesy of an away goal from Viktor Klonaridis.
Callum McGregor had put the Scottish giants in front with his 17th-minute opener, but Celtic now have plenty of work to do ahead of the return leg next week.
“1-1..Big challenge to qualify now for Celtic but not impossible… AEK well organised…another soft goal in Europe… the focus may now be on not getting deals done,” Sutton wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Brendan Rodgers’ side came close to a victory in the closing stages and know they must score at least one in their away fixture to reach the play-off round.
Celtic travel to Hearts in the league at the weekend, before their pivotal European match in Greece next Tuesday.
They were once again without injured centre-forward Moussa Dembele and he had started the season with two goals in two games before his setback.
Rodgers will know that his side will be judged on their success in Europe this campaign after dominating domestically in the last two years, but Celtic have their work cut out to reach the group stages of the Champions League.
