Newcastle United striker Joselu made a brilliant individual start to the season in the opening day defeat to Tottenham, so can he become the club’s surprise package of the season?

The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Spurs last weekend in their first Premier League game of the new campaign, but the 28-year-old did net a powerful header into the bottom corner past World Cup winner Hugo Lloris.

Joselu endured a rough first season at St James’ Park last year and became a top target for the club’s boo-boys after scoring just four goals all season.

Not many would have predicted the centre-forward to deliver such an encouraging display against Spurs, with his overall performance as impressive as his goal after earning a starting spot.

One performance clearly can’t define the Spaniard’s season, but there are a lot of encouraging signs that he’s improved and he could well be a surprise package if he sharpens up in front of goal.

A lot of Joselu’s critics came about last season for his end product, but he will quickly become a fan favourite if he starts scoring on a regular basis.

Joselu does of course have the added competition of new loan signing Salomon Rondon in the squad to fight alongside for a starting position, but it seems unlikely he will be dropped by manager Rafael Benitez for the next game against Cardiff City after his recent display.

He can only continue showing a great work-rate at the point of attack and knows that he will be judged largely on his goal return.
