Newcastle in danger of falling into same striker trap amid Kodjia reports

Newcastle United would be taking a massive risk if they signed Aston Villa ace Jonathan Kodjia.

Newcastle United supporters are desperate for a new striker to arrive this summer and preferably the club need someone with Premier League experience.

The Magpies are circling Aston Villa centre-forward Jonathan Kodjia and he is set to be sold due to the club’s financial problems, according to the Express and Star.

Rafael Benitez’s side are also allegedy chasing West Brom’s Salomon Rondon, and he has a £16.5million release clause, but Villa ace Kodjia could be available as a cheaper option.

However, Newcastle will have clearly not learned their lesson if they opt for Kodjia, given the fact he has no Premier League experience.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international could struggle to make an impact at St. James’ Park in the top flight and there is not much to suggest he would be an upgrade on Dwight Gayle.

Kodjia has a decent return of 38 goals in 100 Championship appearances, but he spent more than half of last season on the sidelines with Villa and it would be a totally different prospect trying to score at a prolific rate at Newcastle.

Benitez’s side are crying out for a proven talent to spearhead their attack and in today’s market may have to fork out a club-record fee to get someone who ticks that box.
