Newcastle Untied legend Alan Shearer labelled his former side poor after their defeat to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

The Magpies were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the second round by Championship opposition, as they slipped to a 3-1 loss at the City Ground.

Forest centre-forward Daryl Murphy put his side in front after just two minutes with a header, before Salomon Rondon’s equaliser in the 92nd minute looked like sending the game to penalties.

However, there was still time for late goals from Matty Cash and Gil Dias for the hosts in a dramatic finish to the cup tie.

Newcastle fans were left frustrated when appeals for a penalty were waved away by the referee with the score at 2-1, as goalkeeper Luke Steele bundled over Ayoze Perez in the box.

Shearer conceded that the North East club were not quite at the races in midweek, but he was left frustrated by the penalty incident.

“We were poor despite a terrible decision go against us!!!” Shearer wrote on his personal Twitter account.
