Alan Shearer has delivered his verdict on the loan signing of striker Salomon Rondon from West Brom.
Alan Shearer believes that Newcastle’s loan signing Salomon Rondon could benefit at St James’ Park and suggests it may be easier for him not playing in a “restricted” West Brom side.
The 28-year-old has joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from West Brom and has taken up the number nine shirt.
The Venezuela international was part of the Baggies side that were relegated from the Premier League last season, but he still chipped in with 10 goals across all competitions for his side.
He is a physical centre-forward that is recognised for his aerial ability and will provide Newcastle with a new focal point to spearhead the attack.
Shearer seemed pleased with the loan capture of Rondon ahead of the new season and highlighted his qualities.
“I think in Rondon they’ve got someone who works very hard, will ask questions both way,” Shearer said on TalkSPORT programme TalkSPORT 2 Tonight (4:55pm, 7 August).
“Let’s not forget that he’s been playing in a very restricted system under managers at West Bromwich Albion. Hopefully he might be a little bit freer in his play.”
Rondon has made 120 appearances in English football with West Brom and managed a tally of 28 goals in return, while he also has experience in the Russian and Spanish leagues.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez will hope that he can help solve his problems in attack for the new campaign, as he competes alongside Joselu and another summer signing in Yoshinori Muto for the striker’s position.
