Barton joined Rangers on a free transfer from Burnley during the summer and has since been suspended by the club for three weeks.

Sky Sports News pundit Tony Gale believes there is no way back for Joey Barton at Rangers after the midfielder was suspended by Rangers for three weeks due to his actions following the 5-1 Old Firm derby defeat to Celtic.

Barton’s actions allegedly involved having row with teammate Andy Halliday and Gers manager Mark Warburton following the heavy defeat to their Glasgow rivals.

And now with the one-time England international being investigated over alleged betting on Celtic’s 7-0 defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League – the situation has only worsened.

Gale has also speculated that perhaps there is more to the story than what has been revealed so far, as he was asked by Sky Sports News presenter Rob Wotton whether he thought Barton had a future at the club, and replied: “Not really, not when you have a month out of it.

“Obviously it’s a little bit worse than what has been portrayed. Because you don’t say okay stay away for a week, two weeks, three weeks unless something has happened behind the scenes.”

This is not the first time Barton has been subject to controversy as the former Manchester City man famously had a training ground bust-up with former teammate Ousmane Dabo.

That was not the first time Barton had got himself in trouble and it wouldn’t be the last as his antics both on and off the pitch, including punching Morten Gamst Pedersen and losing his head for QPR against Manchester City, became somewhat of a regular part of the 34-year-old’s career.

“Unfortunately these things follow Joey around,” Gale continued.

“(Joey has) got to hold (his) hands up and say it can’t be everyone’s fault all of the time – sometimes it’s gotta be you Joey.

“It’s a shame because he’s got talent and particularly in Scotland at that level, he could have been such an influential player but sometime you’ve gotta button it and just get on with football.”
