Tottenham made their Champions League return in front of a record 85,011 strong home support at Wembley Stadium against Monaco.

It may have been a frustrating evening on the pitch as Spurs lost 2-1 to the Ligue 1 side but fans turned out in full force to help break an 82-year-old attendance record in English football.

The previous record for the highest home attendance was 84,567 set by Manchester City in their FA Cup sixth round win over Stoke City in 1934.

Spurs’ Wembley crowd also smashes their own club record of 75,038 set in 1938 at White Hart Lane by almost 10,000. With the Lane currently undergoing redevelopment, Spurs have been allowed to play their home Champions League matches at the 90,000 capacity all-seater stadium.

The home of the English national side is able to house fans whose numbers safely surpass even those huge figures set in the days of terraces and two shilling match tickets.

But even the new English record 85,011 attendance is still quite some way off breaking Celtic’s European record of 136,505 fans who packed into Hampden Park to witness their side’s 2-1 European Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United in 1970.

That’s a record that may not be broken any time soon.
