Four time Olympic Gold Medalist Mo Farah recreated Newcastle United star striker Alan Shearer’s famous celebration before claiming victory in the Great North Run.

Soon after claiming two gold medals in the Rio Olympics, Mo Farah won the Great North Run in style as he paid homage to one of the North-East’s most renowned heroes, Newcastle United’s Alan Shearer.
Despite being an Arsenal fan, the 33-year-old long distance runner re-enacted the Newcastle legend’s iconic volley and celebration combination prior to claiming his third victory in the half-marathon event.

The celebration was rather fitting as he celebrated his Great North Run ‘hat-trick’ by imitating the man who has scored more Premier League hat-tricks than anybody else.
Shearer bagged a record 11 Premier League hat-tricks during his time at Blackburn and Newcastle, as he went on to become the Magpies all-time top goalscorer during a 10-year spell at the club.
Now a pundit for the BBC, the former England captain was quick to recognise Farah’s actions and responded with this tongue-in-cheek tweet prior to his statue unveiling…

And it’s fair to say it went down well with the Geordie viewers…
