The Sunderland keeper pulled off a string of fine saves in the 1-0 Premier League defeat to Spurs at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Jordan Pickford spoke to Sky Sports following a busy afternoon in goal at White Hart Lane as Sunderland continued their win-less start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

A second-half tap in from last season’s Golden Boot winner Harry Kane was enough to separate the sides but had it not been for Pickford, the scoreline could have been much worse for the Black Cats.

The result leaves David Moyes’ side in the relegation zone as Spurs climb to third in the table following an unbeaten start in the league.

And the 22-year-old Black Cats’ stopper was content with his own performance despite the result.

“That’s what I’m there to do really, make some saves” Pickford told Sky Sports. “It’s not ideal to make too many saves really but that’s my job and unfortunately we conceded one.

“It’s disappointing, for the full 90 minutes we had a lot of defending to do but Tottenham are a top-quality side.

“But I just need to keep playing well and keep myself focused and keep working hard and keep getting better. The more games I play, the more mature I become.”

Pickford has seemingly stood up and taken his opportunity to impress following an injury to Sunderland’s first choice keeper Vito Mannone and his recent performances could even see him remain in goal even once Mannone is fit.

Sunderland signed Portuguese keeper Mika to help ease the club’s goalkeeping problems but the young local lad seems to be coping with the pressure well as he looks to maintain his place in between the sticks.

“Unfortunately, Vito (Mannone) got injured but that’s what I’m here to do and be a good back-up,” Pickford continued. “Hopefully I can capitalise and keep working hard.”
