Grant Hanley watched from the sidelines at St. James’ Park as Newcastle United lost 2-0 in the Championship against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Defender Grant Hanley told NUFC TV that he is hoping his Newcastle United side can exact revenge on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday evening (7.45pm kick-off) following the 2-0 defeat to Walter Zenga’s side at St. James’ Park on Saturday.

A Chancel Mbemba own goal and an edge-of-the-box strike from Helder Costa in either half saw Wolves claim a surprise victory over the Magpies, who went into the game having won their previous six in all competitions.

Newcastle’s previous match saw Hanley complete the rout with his first goal for the club in a 6-0 win at QPR last week meanwhile Wolves lost 4-0 at home to Barnsley before ending the Tyneside club’s hot run of form.

However, Rafa Benitez’s side have been given a good opportunity to redeem themselves in the EFL Cup just three days after their Championship defeat.

And Hanley believes United’s busy schedule can help them quickly move on from disappointing defeat like they suffered over the weekend.

“Especially in this league, whenever you have a bad game you always have a chance to put things right pretty quickly,” Hanley told NUFC TV.

“Obviously we played (Wolves) on Saturday and now we look at the game against them on Tuesday and it’s a chance for a wee bit of revenge.”

While Hanley admits beating Wolves is United’s short term priority as the club are looking to progress to the fourth round of the League Cup for just the 18th time in their history – he is still remaining focused on the bigger picture for the season.

“The main focus here is promotion, so that’s the main push,” continued the Scotland international.

“Our season isn’t going to revolve around getting our own back on Wolves but it’s a chance for us personally right that wrong from Saturday.”
