The bookies have slashed the odds for the England international goalkeeper to join the Black Cats from Manchester City to 2/1.
Manchester City’s Joe Hart applauds fans as he celebrates at the end of the match
With Joe Hart set to move away from Manchester City by the end of the transfer window, Sunderland have emerged as surprise favourites to capture the England number one.
Hart has been out of favour since new City boss Pep Guardiola took over and is now looking for a new club.
And with current Black Cats’ keeper Vito Mannone ruled out for three months with an elbow injury, Hart could be seen as a potential replacement for the Italian.
The odds for Sunderland to sign the 29-year-old have been cut from 33/1 to 2/1 in the past 24 hours which is certainly a positive sign from a their perspective.
Liverpool, also priced at 2/1, remain in the hunt as they look to challenge for a European spot under Jurgen Klopp whereas Sunderland boss David Moyes has admitted his club will most likely be fighting at the wrong end of the table.
Sunderland’s Vito Mannone celebrates
England under-21s’ goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is set to step in for Mannone in the short term as Sunderland consider their options.
It remains unclear whether Moyes will make a move for the Citizens’ stopper but a loan deal is considered the more likely option should anything come to fruition.
Hart is considered as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers and despite a shaky 2016, the England number one could prove to be a real coup for Sunderland as they look to keep their top flight status intact for yet another season.
Still fan reaction has been rather mixed, here is what they had to say over about Hart’s possible move:
