And Mertens apparently realises that, at the age of 30, this might be his last chance of moving to the Premier League.
Mertens has reportedly spoken to his international teammate, Romelu Lukaku, about moving to England – and has heard good things.
With Napoli keen not to lose Mertens on a free transfer, West Ham United are said to be lining up a shock bid.
But the transfer appears to be an absolute no-brainer for Everton to attempt to complete this summer.
Everton are said to have a vast amount of funds to spend in the coming months, with Ronald Koeman keen to improve his attacking options.
And, if Mertens is available, he should surely be on the Toffees’ transfer wishlist.
Everton’s ambition has actually been questioned by Lukaku, but he may be persuaded to stay if players like Mertens were arriving.
Mertens has scored 31 goals in 44 matches for Everton this term, making him one of the deadliest strikers across European football.
And Everton simply cannot afford to pass up the opportunity to add a player of Mertens’ quality, if he is open to a move this summer.
