Dutch sensation Matthijs De Ligt has been speaking about his future ahead of Ajax’s Champions League semi-final.

The centre-back is said to be interesting Barcelona, with Liverpool also keen, The Mirror report.

De Ligt partners Virgil van Dijk for Holland and the Reds could secure a major coup if they beat off competition to bring him to Anfield.

He believes he will cost less than the fee Barcelona paid to sign his Ajax teammate Frenkie De Jong, who will switch at the end of the season. BBC Sport report he will cost £65 million.

De Ligt said, quoted by Voetball Primeur: “I don’t think they will sell me for more than he does.

“Midfielders are normally more expensive than defenders, but I really have no idea. It depends on Ajax. Frenkie has left for a nice price, so we’ll see.”

De Ligt is acutely aware of the transfer interest in his services.

He added: “I haven’t made a decision yet, so I really have no idea what to expect in the future.”

“My focus is on the rest of the season. We still have a lot to play for, so let’s make sure we close the season as well as possible.”

De Ligt’s stock will can rise this week and next with strong performances in the Champions League semi-finals, when he faces Tottenham over both legs.

If De Ligt is right about his fee, Liverpool really have to splash out to sign the centre-back.

We do however suspect he will end up costing even more than his teammate.
