Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has confirmed to the club’s official Twitter account that midfielder Kenny McLean will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

McLean, 25, joined the Dons from St Mirren back in February 2015, and he has been a major part of McInnes’ side ever since, scoring 16 times in 126 games for Aberdeen.

The midfielder earned his first Scotland cap last year off the back of his impressive display at Pittodrie, and having hit 14 goals in two full seasons with the Dons before the start of this term, he unsurprisingly attracted major interest.

As reported by the Daily Record back in June, Rangers made a bid to sign McLean – believed to be worth around £300,000 – but the Dons rejected the offer as they looked to keep their midfielder, having lost Ryan Jack to Rangers just weeks earlier.

The problem for Aberdeen has been that McLean’s contract with Aberdeen expires at the end of the season, and the Dons are all too aware that he can walk away for nothing in 2018.

Whether it’s a pre-contract agreement or leaving when his deal ends, McLean’s options are open – and manager McInnes has now offered an update on the playmaker’s future.

McInnes has told the Aberdeen official Twitter account that McLean has informed Aberdeen that he will be leaving in 2018, with the Dons boss appreciating the midfielders’s honesty.

With The Scottish Sun reporting that Rangers are eyeing a January move for McLean, it remains to be seen whether Caixinha can land his man, but a move to Ibrox – which is something of a dream switch for McLean given that he grew up supporting Rangers – could be on the cards having announced his intention to leave Aberdeen next year.
