Spurs appear to be at risk of losing one of their most important players with Chelsea hoping to take advantage of Toby Alderweireld’s contract situation.
That pesky wage structure was always going to cause problems for Tottenham Hotspur eventually.
In truth, there was absolutely nothing wrong with what Danny Rose said in his explosive interview with The Sun a fortnight ago. Yes, the timing was a little off, just a few days before the dawn of a new Premier League season, but it’s hard to ignore the fact that Spurs’ players are vastly underpaid in today’s market.
When you consider that Toby Alderweireld, arguably the finest centre-half in England over the last two years, is on a basic wage of just £49,000 a week (The Sun), you can perhaps see why Spurs’ best and brightest would be tempted by wallet-busting moves elsewhere, no matter how exciting the project on offer in North London.

Blues boss Antonio Conte has frequently demanded fresh signings at Stamford Bridge and it is understood that Alderweireld would receive a far higher wage if he was to make the short trip across the capital.
Furthermore, the report adds that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is refusing to bow down to Alderweireld’s rather modest demands of £80,000 a week, giving fans something to worry about with regards to the future of one of their key men.
There’s a sense that Spurs need to get with the times and losing Alderweireld to a Premier League title rival would threaten all the excellent groundwork put in place in North London.
