Liverpool fans were stunned when Stewart Downing scored the first competitive goal of their season.

Here is a snapshot of the reaction from fans on Twitter when Downing opened the scoring in their Europa League tie against Gomel. He was trending worldwide – and finally for a good reason.

@buggylfc: Could are luck be changing? Last season that downing shot probably would of hit the post and this game would of been a draw

@lfcnewz: End of the day we played a no mark team tonight but downing should go into the season with some confidence. Fingers crossed

Stewart Downing was heavily criticised last season for his lack out output, mocked even. Zero goals and zero assists was the big headlien figure, although this applied to Premier League games only. He actually scored two goals in Liverpool’s FA Cup campaign last season, so this is not his first. And it doesn’t get him off the hook for this season either, nobody will be entirely convinced at a goal against previously unheard of Belorussian side Gomel. If he can do it in the Premier League, then he will really start to answer his critics, but after one game of the season so far, he can’t really do any more right now, and this will be a good confidence boost for him.
