Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock earned praise from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie for his display against Everton on Thursday night.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies recorded a resounding 4-1 victory over the Toffees at Goodison Park.

Newcastle started slowly but went on to open the scoring in the 28th minute, courtesy of a great counter-attack.

Joelinton cut inside and got a shot away and, although Jordan Pickford parried it, Callum Wilson was on hand to score.

Newcastle then doubled their lead in the 72nd minute as the impressive Willock crossed for Joelinton to head home.

The 23-year-old did well to get past Ben Godfrey and showed great awareness to pick out his teammate.

Joelinton weighed in with a downward header into the far corner for his eighth goal of the season.

Downie loved what he saw from Willock, telling Sky Sports (27/4, 21:21): “That is sensational from Joe Willock.

“Breezes past Godfrey like he’s not there, and hung it up on a plate for Joelinton.

“Two-nil Newcastle, and they’ve countered Everton yet again.”

Moments earlier, Willock very nearly got on the scoresheet with a superb effort against the Toffees.

He teed himself up for a volley that Pickford had to be at full stretch to keep out.

“Willock with pass of the season on Sunday, and almost goal of the season tonight,” Downie said.

“Only matched by a world class save by England’s No 1.”

The Magpies went on to add a third just a few minutes later as Wilson got his second of the game.

Bruno Guimaraes drove forward pretty much unopposed before setting his teammate up for a great finish high into the net.

Everton did manage to pull one back on 80 minutes through Dwight McNeil, but Newcastle soon restored their three-goal lead.

Alexander Isak was the architect, getting the better of the opposition defence before setting up fellow substitute Jacob Murphy.

Newcastle have certainly turned a corner after losing to Aston Villa, winning their last two games by 6-1 and then 4-1.

The Magpies will certainly fancy their chances of finishing in the top four, and then the sky’s the limit.
