Well, Liverpool have appointed a new figure for the coaching staff – and it’s come out of left field somewhat.

The legendary Claudio Taffarel has signed up for a role on Jurgen Klopp’s team.

The 55-year-old is Liverpool’s new goalkeeping coach and will work alongside John Achtenberg and Jack Robinson at the Axa Training Centre.

This is someone who won a World Cup title with Brazil in 1994 and is therefore quite a high-profile appointment, despite a lack of talk about it before the fact.

Taffarel reacted to the arrival on Instagram and a series of high-profile Brazilian players responded.

Responses

Costa, who is on Juventus’ books, wrote: “Congratulations Taffaaaaa! What a time.”

And Willian wrote: “Congratulations Tafa, may God continue to bless your journey.”

Other well-wishers included Alexandre Pato, Denilson and the wife of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Alisson has worked with Taffarel at international level and the former Roma stopper is thought to have played a role in his appointment [Goal].

It’s scary to consider but Alisson could still get better and it’ll be interesting to see if Taffarel’s arrival coincides with the big man reaching another level excellence.

Remember, Alisson is still only 29 which, for a goalkeeper, is relatively young.

And it wouldn’t be that surprising if he does indeed improve.
