Rangers are closing in on a double move.

Scott Arfield of Burnley celebrates after scoring his sides first goal during the Premier League match between Burnley and Watford at Turf Moor on December 9, 2017 in Burnley, England.

Rangers are closing in on a double move for Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor.

The Scotsman reported the pair are both closing in on switch to Ibrox, leaving Burnley and Hull City.

It will be an signal of intent from Rangers and show that a big summer of change is upcoming.

The Gers are already working behind the scenes to appoint a new manager, with BBC Sport reporting they are holding talks with Steven Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard of BT Sport looks on during the Emirates FA Cup Final between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on May 27, 2017 in London, England.

McGregor and Arfield would be akin to a ‘welcome gift’ for the new boss, who will then want to start work on identifying his own transfer targets to add to these.

This season has been an underwhelming one for the Gers, who will finish trophyless for the second season in a row upon their return to the top flight.

A shake up is needed and the first steps have been taken.

Ross McCrorie of Rangers fouls Moussa Dembele of Celtic and a penalty is awarded to Celtic during the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15,...

The 4-0 loss to Celtic a week ago may have exaggerated just how far Rangers are behind their rivals, but the board appear to be taking no chances.

Players will be arriving and there will be outgoings too, and some of the loanees won’t be retained.

It is going to be a frenetic summer for Rangers and this is just the start, whether it turns out to be with Gerrard, or somebody else.

The big challenge will be how the new boss can gel next season’s squad together.

There is still work to be done this season too, starting with the league game against Celtic this weekend.

A win will lift spirits hugely, but even if there is another heavy defeat, the busy work behind the scenes to sign players and look at a new manager is a welcome enough distraction to keep fans optimistic heading into the summer that better times are around the corner.
