Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost has told De Telegraaf that international team-mate Vincent Janssen needs time to shine at Tottenham Hotspur.

Janssen, 22, smashed 31 goals in 49 games for AZ Alkmaar last season, and his goalscoring feats in the Netherlands triggered major interest in his signature over the summer transfer window.

Ultimately, it was Tottenham who won the race for Janssen’s signature, with Mauricio Pochettino choosing to add the Dutchman as competition for star striker Harry Kane.

So far, Janssen has scored just once for Tottenham – a penalty against Gillingham in the EFL Cup – and he has been criticised by a number of pundits in recent weeks, who don’t believe he has the killer instinct in front of goal.

His cause hasn’t been aided by Pochettino choosing to play winger Heung-min Son up front against Manchester City on Sunday in the absence of striker Kane, with Janssen left on the bench.

It’s worth noting that Janssen endured a similarly slow start to life at AZ Alkmaar, but eventually found his feet – and his international team-mate Bas Dost has moved to defend Janssen.

Janssen wasn’t the only Dutch international striker to earn a summer move, as giant forward Dost joined Sporting Lisbon from Wolfsburg, and he has now told De Telegraaf that Janssen deserves time to shine.

Dost added that Janssen is going to score goals eventually, and knows how impressive he can be having seen him play well for the Dutch national team.

“That crap about Vincent, give that boy some time,” said Dost. “He’s going to score, and he performs well in the Dutch national team as well,” he added.

Do you think Janssen will come good at Tottenham?
