Borussia Dortmund appear to have left the door open for Everton to sign Wojciech Szczesny with Calciomercato reporting the German giants can’t afford the Juventus goalkeeper’s £100,000-a-week wages.

It’s a problem that has followed Dortmund like a bad smell for years.

For a club of such stature and ambition, why have the 2013 Champions League finalists still not found a top-class shot-stopper worthy of the name?

Roman Burki flits from awesome to awful far too frequently while, in his compatriot’s recent injury-enforced absence, Marwin Hitz hasn’t covered himself in glory either.

So with Dortmund looking to put a difficult 2020/21 season behind them – one beset by individual errors and a horrific defensive record – a new number one is a must.

Andre Onana, Alexander Nubel and Gregor Kobel have all been linked of late but, according to reports in Italy, we can draw a firm line through any speculation linking Szczesny with Signal Iduna Park.

Calciomercato claims Dortmund aren’t going to sign a player over the age of 30 – especially when that player earns more than £5 million a season (£100,000 a week).

That appears to be in stark contrast to Everton’s stance regarding the three-time Serie A winner.

Earlier this week, TuttoJuve reported Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees are willing to match the financial package Szczesny earns at Juventus, although they are unlikely to pay more than £10 million for a man who started his career at Premier League rivals Arsenal.
