An injury to one Glasgow Rangers midfielder could benefit another.

According to Daily Record, Rangers are sweating on the fitness of Graham Dorrans, with the midfielder expected to see a specialist this week in a bid to get to the bottom of his ankle injury. And while that is a blow for the Gers, it could allow another player to make a claim for a prolonged spell in the starting XI.

Jason Holt has started Rangers’ last four league games and he has looked better with each passing game, to such an extent that his resurgence could considerably ease the absence of summer signing Dorrans.

The latter has missed Rangers’ last two games, against Hearts and Partick Thistle, and it may not be a coincidence that those were the games in which Holt proved his worth, winning over many of his doubters and suggesting a bright future at Ibrox after all.

Holt looked to be very much on the periphery under former boss Pedro Caixinha, but things can chance quickly in football and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain his recent form when Rangers get back to domestic matters later this month.

Dorrans’ experience and ability mean he will always be a miss, but Holt will see the Scotland international’s absence as an opportunity, and caretaker boss Graeme Murty will simply tell him to continue to do what he has been doing in a bid to maintain Rangers’ upturn in form.

Rangers have matches against Hamilton and Dundee before a double-header against Aberdeen that could go a long way to deciding who acts as Celtic’s main challengers for the title in the second half of the campaign.
