Tony Dorigo has suggested to Betstars that West Bromwich Albion defensive midfielder Gareth Barry would be a good signing for Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.

According to The Mirror, Villa are interested in signing Barry this summer, but only if they are promoted to the Premier League.

The Villans have finished in the top six of the Championship this season and are aiming to win promotion to Premier League via the playoffs.

Former Villa defender Dorigo believes that Barry would be a good signing for Steve Bruce’s side.

Dorigo told Betstars when asked if Barry returning to Villa would be a good move: “Yes absolutely right. He’s a wise old head who would work well with some younger, foreign talent or who have come through the ranks at Villa.

“You need the right balance in the squad and [John] Terry and Gareth Barry, even though their legs might be going a bit, what they would give off the pitch would be invaluable.

“It will be a difficult season for whichever team goes up, it’ll be tough and they will be the favourites to come back down again so you need some of those old, wise heads around to help.”

Good signing

Barry is 37 years of age and is past his prime, but the former Manchester City defensive midfielder can still do a good job in the Premier League for one more season at least.

It would not be a bad idea for Villa to re-sign the Englishman should they win promotion to the Premier League for the 2018-19 campaign.

Barry, who earns £60,000 per week as salary according to Spotrac.com, would bring a wealth of experience and a certain degree of leadership to the team at Villa Park.
