Speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Matt Doherty’s shock deadline day departure from Tottenham.

Doherty had his contract terminated on deadline day, seemingly from out of nowhere, and according to Gold, the squad is absolutely shocked by this development.

Interestingly, the journalist also noted that both Harry Kane and Eric Dier won’t be too happy with this move, stating that the pair were pretty much best friends with Doherty.

Gold shared what he knows about the Irishman.

“An absolutely chaotic deal. Matt Doherty has ended up at one of the biggest clubs in the world. He’s done well out of this. They look after their players well and develop them,” Gold said.

“It’s a good move for him. It’s a loss for the squad, he’s a very popular player, pretty much best mates with Harry Kane and Eric Dier as well, don’t think they’ll be delighted with this. I know the players were absolutely shocked when they found out he was going, they were absolutely gobsmacked.”

Blow

This could be a real blow for Tottenham.

Yes, Doherty hasn’t been an important player for Spurs this season, but you can’t underestimate just how important the dynamics within a dressing room are.

Doherty was clearly popular and close to two of Spurs’ most important players, and losing his presence behind the scenes will effect things on the pitch.

Of course, tough decisions have to be made in football sometimes and friendships have to change, but we can’t help but wonder whether or not Spurs will live to regret letting Doherty go.
