Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Vincent Kompany has been discussing Phil Foden and his rise to prominence at Manchester City.

The youngster has been simply excellent since breaking into the City first-team under Pep Guardiola, and despite already being one of the best players in the country, he’s still going from strength to strength.

Kompany has been full of praise for Foden, not just for his technical ability, but also for his footballing IQ.

What’s been said?

Kompany was asked what made Foden so special.

“His progression rate. He came through as a 17-year-old, but with Phil, I don’t think people understand how relentless he is and how much he loves what he does. He’s relentlessly obsessed with the game. He’s a nice guy, but if you put him on the football pitch his football brain is awesome, his football brain is quick. He always looks to run at people and to get behind and to make that last pass and he does it with such good timing as well,” Kompany said.

Superstar in the making

It’s one thing to have the technical gifts that Foden quite clearly has, but it’s something else entirely to have an elite-level footballing brain.

Kompany knows exactly what Foden is about behind the scenes, and if he’s as clever as he says he is, he will just keep on improving.

It’s scary to think of how good this young man will be in a few years’ time, but one thing is for sure, City have a star on their hands here.
