Speaking on the 90Min YouTube channel, Paul Merson has been discussing Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The pundit was tasked with creating a combined XI of Tottenham and Arsenal player ahead of this weekend’s north London derby, and despite his Gunners affiliations, even Merson had to admit that Lloris was his choice in goal.

Merson said that Lloris is actually a very underrated goalie, claiming that he should be in the same conversation as Alisson and Ederson.

What’s been said?

Merson had nothing but good things to say about Lloris.

“I’m with you, he’s a World Cup winner. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves sometimes. I think he’s very underrated. They don’t talk about him in the Ederson or Alisson conversation, but I think he’s a top goalkeeper,” Merson said.

Alisson and Ederson level?

Lloris is undoubtedly a talented goalkeeper, but is he really at the level of Alisson and Ederson?

He’s been in great form this season, and on his day he’s nigh-on unbeatable, but let’s not forget that he’s dropped a few clangers in his time.

Merson mentions that he’s a World Cup winner, and while that’s true, he did make a high-profile error in the World Cup final, allowing Mario Mandzukic to score.

Lloris is brilliant, but it’s hard to place him amongst the very best in the world due to the fact he’s got a mistake in him.

Perhaps we’re falling foul of underrating Lloris in the way Merson says, but we can’t put him in that top-tier of goalkeeper.
