Some Liverpool fans are puzzled over what they saw from Andy Robertson on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool defender has been one of Europe’s left-backs since joining the Reds for a bargain £8 million in 2017.
In that time, Robertson has played a massive role in Jurgen Klopp’s side conquering Europe and later England, winning a Premier League title after a 30-year drought.
It’s fair to say that left-back is his best – and only – position, but that isn’t where he featured for Scotland in World Cup qualifying defeat by Denmark last night. Nope.
There, Robertson played as a wing-back…….on the right-hand side, due to injuries to Nathan Patterson and Stephen O’Donnell.
And it’s fair to say that he didn’t have a solid game in these uncomfortable surroundings.
Here’s how some Liverpool fans reacted to Steve Clarke’s decision to use him in that role.
Less than ideal
This isn’t what Robertson needs.
He didn’t have a great first game back in Liverpool’s XI against Chelsea last weekend, his first competitive appearance of the season due to injury.
And with Kostas Tsimikas proving himself a very capable deputy during the first two Premier League matches without him, suddenly there’s a bit of competition for the Scot.
His place isn’t that under threat, it must be said, but he does certainly need a boost of confidence and even though there was a very good explanation for his struggles against Denmark, it won’t have been great for his overall morale.
