Brad Friedel wasn’t having any of it when it was suggested to him that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool should sign Manchester United duo, Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.

The former Premier League goalkeeper wants Liverpool to bring a couple more faces into the middle of the park and also sign another centre-back to help out Virgil van Dijk.

It was suggested to him that they should look to sign Manchester United’s sought-after duo, Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay, but he made it clear ‘no, not for Liverpool’, as he told The Transfer Show on Sky Sports (07/08/23 at 7:35 pm).

Of course, that’s not going to happen, but it doesn’t mean that the Reds aren’t in need of bulking up in midfield and at the back.

The departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, alongside Alex Oxlade-Chamberlian, James Milner and Naby Keita, have left a big hole.

What about if Jurgen Klopp loses van Dijk or Ibrahima Konate to an injury, then it would put the club in a difficult situation, but Friedel isn’t too worried.

“Jurgen Klopp has come in and gone from strength to strength to strength,” said Friedel. “Now, probably for the first time in his managerial career, he is able to rebuild a team. He has usually got to a certain point and gone.

“If they can’t get a deal done, for the sake of a budget, I am a Liverpool supporter. I am fine with it. I like their business so far, but I would like to get them one or two in the midfield – Their back four, sometimes, looks incredible, to me. Maybe one more piece of the puzzle at the back, in the centre, next to van Dijk.

On McTominay and Maguire being available: “No, not for Liverpool. Don’t do the Man United and Liverpool thing right now.”

Maguire and McTominay heading for the exit door

It seems highly likely that both players won’t be at Manchester United by the time the 2023 summer transfer window slams shut.

Could they even be teammates at another club? Well, it seems as though Maguire is closing in on a move to West Ham United.

The Hammers are also pushing for the Scotsman, but there seems to be an issue, and if that deal doesn’t get done, then they are targeting James Ward-Prowse.
