Toby Alderweireld was a glaring omission from Tottenham Hotspur’s matchday squad against Chelsea at the weekend.

The centre-back had played 90 minutes for Belgium just days earlier, and it came as a surprise that he was not even named on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham’s 3-1 win proved that they had the quality to win without Alderweireld, with his contract wrangle overshadowing his return from injury.

Toby Alderweireld of Spura arrives prior to The Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final match between Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur at Liberty Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Swansea, Wales.

The Times had reported earlier this season that Alderweireld could be sold amid his desire for a wage increase which would see him become the club’s highest paid player.

Despite the snub, Alderweireld was glowingly positive on Twitter after the game, praising his teammates.

Alderweireld ignored his own personal situation, and fans reacted for the first time with hostility towards the defender, believing his love for the team to be disingenuous.

Supporters questioned Alderweireld, asking if he even wrote the message, or if it was simply written by his PR team.
