Marc Overmars has described reported Arsenal target Jonathan David as a ‘very good player’ but says Ajax will not be making a move for the £30 million-rated Gent talisman, speaking to AjaxTV.
While a financial crisis of unprecedented proportions has flipped the transfer market on it’s head and shrunk price-tags all across the globe, it seems that no one has told Gent.
According to HLN, the Jupiler League outfit are still expected to demand around £30 million for a 20-year-old who might just be Europe’s second-most exciting young forward – behind a certain Dortmund-based goal-machine of course.
The prolific David shot to fame with 23 goals and ten assists across 2019/20.
And Goal in February suggest that the Canada international could soon be bequeathed the honour of replacing the talismanic figure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal.
Gunners legend Overmars is always on the lookout for diamonds in the rough and David, on paper at least, looks like the archetypal Ajax signing.
But with Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar signing a new contract, and with David Neres, Quincy Promes and Dusan Tadic all expected to stay at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Overmars has opened the door for Arsenal to snap up a man who has admirers all across the continent.
“If all players who are linked to Ajax come, we would have ten teams,” says director of football Overmars.
“This player (David) is very good, but does not play as a real number 9. He is a shadow striker and we don’t need him.”
As Overmars points out, David is at his best as an ethereal number ten, ghosting between the lines with devastating effect in a manner reminiscent of a young Thomas ‘Raumdeuter’ Muller.
Walfoot claimed in March that Tottenham, Liverpool, Wolves, West Ham, Aston Villa and more have all sent scouts to watch the Brooklyn-born starlet in action this season.
But, with Aubameyang packing his bags, Arsenal need a new goalscorer more than most.
