Liverpool fans aren’t exactly pleased after hearing Rafael Benitez make a point about how much money they have spent in recent years.

Liverpool ran out 4-1 winners at Goodison Park yesterday, with Everton simply unable to compete with their near neighbours.

The Toffees were outclassed from the start, as Liverpool won in blistering fashion.

And after the game Benitez said to Amazon Prime: “It is always bad to lose but when you lose to a team that has spent so much money and have so many good players sometimes it is because you make a mistake and the other team is quite good.”

Now, Benitez is actually more popular with Liverpool supporters than he is with Everton fans right now.

But it may be wise for the Spaniard to refrain from commenting on Liverpool’s spending.

That is because the Reds have actually got a lower net spend than Everton over the past five years.

And Benitez’s comments actually ended up winding up many Reds supporters yesterday.

Under pressure

Benitez is now under serious pressure at Everton, after a disastrous run of form.

Everton have suffered injuries to some key players during that time, but their recent performances have been a real cause for concern.

With Benitez’s appointment controversial from the outset, due to his Liverpool connections, patience is wearing thin right now.

And Everton will surely have to take action if results keep going against them, before the atmosphere around Goodison Park turns even more toxic.
