There’ll be a couple of relieved Liverpool players on the way back to Merseyside around now.
Liverpool held Manchester City to a 2-2 draw at Eastlands to ensure that they remain in the Premier League title race.
Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are still one point behind City, shot themselves in the foot on a couple of occasions this evening, though.
Fabinho was largely culpable for allowing Kevin De Bruyne the time and space necessary to take his shot which led to the Reds falling behind after only five minutes.
And then Trent Alexander-Arnold was guilty of sleeping as Gabriel Jesus nipped in behind him to fire City 2-1 ahead, after Diogo Jota equalised for Liverpool.
And Michael Owen, speaking to Optus Sport during half-time, noticed what Jota did just before the Jesus goal.
The former Liverpool hitman illustrated how Jota reminded Alexander-Arnold about who he was marking by pointing at Pep Guardiola’s attacker, only for the 23-year-old to ignore him.
He told Optus Sport at half time: “I also think when we see the ball get cleared, we see Jota pointing to Trent saying ‘quick look, that’s your man!’. He’s telling him ‘don’t let him go’ and what does Trent do? He lets him go.”
Like Fabinho, it was an uncharacteristically poor showing from Alexander-Arnold.
Well, defensively.
Going forward he was excellent as usual and bagged another assist for Jota’s equaliser, but defensively he was certainly struggling a little and that’s why he and Fabinho will go to sleep relieved figures tonight.
