Speaking on the LadBible YouTube channel, Jamie Redknapp has been discussing the Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Kyle Walker debate.

The pundit was tasked with creating his combined Liverpool and Manchester City XI, and at right-back he thought there was only one player to choose.

Indeed, while Alexander-Arnold and Walker have been compared for years, Redknapp can’t quite understand why this is a debate.

The former Liverpool man believes that Alexander-Arnold is streets ahead of his Manchester City counterpart.

What’s been said?

Redknapp spoke about Alexander-Arnold and Walker.

“Is this really a debate? Come on, it’s Trent. I don’t know why it is a debate really, the midfield I’m nervous, but at right-back I thought you might have given me this one,” Redknapp said

“I think this guy is always changing the game with his crossing and his ability to set goals up. I think Kyle Walker is an incredible player, but this one, I think you have to give this to me.”

Completely different players

Comparing Kyle Walker to Trent Alexander-Arnold is like comparing apples and oranges.

The two line-up as right-backs on paper, but make no mistake about it, Alexander-Arnold is not a right back in the traditional sense.

The England international’s number one instruction is not to defend, it’s to create, and Redknapp would probably have been better off comparing him to someone like Kevin De Bruyne rather than Walker.

Walker himself is one of the best in Premier League history when it comes to performing the roles you’d expect of a right-back, and, in all honesty, different managers would see these two differently.

Pep Guardiola would probably rather have Walker, while Jurgen Klopp wouldn’t swap Alexander-Arnold for anyone.

This shouldn’t be a debate, not because one is better than the other, but because they’re completely different players.
