Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is taking England’s Group Stage exit harder than most.
England fans are of course still reeling after their nation was dumped out of the FIFA World Cup at the Group Stage for the first time since 1958 this week. Italy were supposed to keep our slim hopes alive by beating ‘minnows’ Costa Rica – unfortunately it appears these minnows have razer sharp teeth.
The Costa Ricans are now through after defeating both Italy and Uruguay – who face each other in the final group game – which is now a straight shoot-out for the latter stages.
For us fans it is a tough time, but at least it feels like the players are equally as gutted. You could feel the disappointment and despondency in the voices of Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney in a press conference yesterday. Later today, you are likely to hear a similar tone from the manager Roy Hodgson and his captain Steven Gerrard, who is rumoured to be considering international retirement.
One player who is taking it very hard is Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. He came into the tournament off the back of an excellent Premier League season, and he also scored against Italy. Unfortunately not even he could reverse the fortunes of the England side.
