‘Don’t have to sell’: Manager comments on reported Celtic and QPR target

Celtic and Queens Park Rangers will face a renewed challenge in their attempts to sign Alfie Doughty or Macauley Bonne, with Lee Bowyer claiming that Charlton Athetic no longer need the money while speaking to London News Online.

Only a few weeks ago, there appeared to be a very real chance that a Charlton side relegated from the Championship would have little choice but to cash in on one or two of their star players.

But with the affable Thomas Sandgaard completing his protracted takeover of the crisis-hit League One outfit, things are finally looking up for the Addicks again.

If Celtic or QPR were planning a new bid for Doughty or Bonne before the October deadline, it seems they would now be wasting their time.

“Before, we might have not been able to pay wages and had to sell someone – we were close to that,” says Bowyer. “Today we don’t have to sell anyone.

“Thomas (Sandgaard) is a wealthy man and we’re very lucky. That’s where his money does count.

“Any deal has to be right and the offer has to be right. Gareth Bale just moved to Tottenham and that shows if the right offer comes in then us as a football club need to think about it.

“You have to ask – is that [the offer] good business for the club?”

Bowyer has been very outspoken in his beliefs that Doughty should reject Celtic in order to continue his development south of the border.

The Hoops have failed with two bids for the 21-year-old speedster, the second worth just £650,000 (Glasgow Times), and now appear to have identified Bristol City’s Niclas Eliasson as an alternative option for the left-hand side (Sun).

A QPR side who lost Eberechi Eze and Jordan Hugill over the summer also made a number of offers for the ever-improving Bonne.
