Michael Owen has stated that Joel Matip was fortunate to score his goal during Liverpool’s 2-1 win at Southampton on Tuesday night.

The former striker added by saying that the centre-back was ‘surprised’ by his winning goal, as he told Premier League Productions (17/05/22 at 9:55 pm).

Takumi Minamino cancelled out Nathan Redmond’s opener in the first half, before the away side pushed for that winner in the second.

Following a corner, a header at that near post landed in the danger zone where Matip was and he simply stuck his head towards the ball, ahead of Kyle Walker-Peters, and saw it loop into the net.

It’s back-to-back Premier League goals for Matip now because he also equalised for the Reds during their comeback win at Aston Villa last week.

Nonetheless, this is what Owen made of Matip’s goal yesterday, as the race for the Premier League title goes down to the final day of the season.

On Matip being fortunate for his goal: “I don’t think he knew much about this,” said Owen. “It’s a poor header at the near post for starters.

“Don’t get me wrong, he’s brave and he is putting his head in there. But I think this takes a little glancing flick off Walker-Peters just before it hits him.

“He’s surprised when the ball goes in, but I think it just takes a nick and bounces into his head. And you can tell by the spin on the ball as well.”
